What you need to know…

Why is this surgery performed?

Lumbar spine surgery is done to relieve back or leg pain caused by herniated discs, spinal stenosis, instability of the spine, or other conditions that have not improved with treatments like medication or physical therapy.

Possible Risks of Surgery

While many patients improve, every surgery carries some risks. The most important ones are explained below.

General Risks

– Wound infection
– Bleeding
– Reactions to anesthesia

Specific Spine Risks

– Nerve injury: numbness, weakness, or persistent pain
– Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak
– Pain that does not improve or return
– Internal scar tissue that can compress nerves
– Spinal instability: may require screws or plates

Other Risks

– Blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) if the patient does not move early after surgery.

What to Expect After Surgery

Most patients experience improved pain and quality of life. Physical therapy may be needed.
Controlled movement helps your recovery.
